At least 64 Killed in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Police Raid on Organized Crime

No less than 64 civilians lost their lives in a police operation cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's past.

Four security agents were among those killed during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. Over 80 individuals were arrested.

Violent conflicts broke out when about 2,500 security personnel moved in on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho responded with gunfire, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities said.

The International human rights organization expressed being "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas close to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the central command of a major organised crime groups.

Local authorities confirmed no less than 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Local Reaction

Locals have likened the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

Organized Crime Spread

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and power in the informal settlements.

Security forces reported over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the mission, together with dozens of firearms.
