A trio of officers lost their lives and at least 15 others got wounded in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation occurred as police and firefighters approached the house close to Verona to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman got detained at the site and one more individual who fled subsequent to the blast was apprehended shortly later. The trio have been transported to the hospital.

The blast could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the scene revealed the building reduced to a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who added that previous tries had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the past.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the home. When the police came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe a family member triggered the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno stated to news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the detonation precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the residence, the minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the incident consisted of 11 other members of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The official believed the detonation had happened on a story above the entrance and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the incident, he said officers had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being activated”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents informed reporters, adding that the family members had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the trio of personnel who had died in the performance of their duties.
